Coach's Comments on the 4th of July - Rec Style!

“Happy 4th of July!”

WOW! Saturday night, after our all day Rec Picnic, we had a wonderful view of FOUR fireworks shows. It was pretty Cool! It started at 7:45pm with Hickham AFB show (looking directly over the reef airport runway), followed by the 8:00pm Kapolei fireworks show (far off in the distance towards Ewa Beach), then the 8:15pm Magic Island show (looking in the opposite direction over Aloha Tower - this one was really large) and then ended with the 8:30pm show from Pearl Harbor (looking North in the Keehi Lagoon direction). All the shows lasted quite a long time with some running over 20 minutes.

This was the first time our Rec Ohana spent the entire day at the canoe site for 4th of July! Thanks to Ulu and Ku for setting everything up and arranging all the food and Bar-B-Q. Rec paddlers were coming and going all day, enjoying the ocean and beach, lots of food and fun fellowship. I think Coach Ken and Coach Jimmy said we had about 10 new beginner paddlers.

Ku even brought his lawn mower and weed-whacker, which stimulated an early morning clean up and beautification project. We had our own green “Spirit of Aloha” team who cleaned up and cut weeds under the entire area of the big Poinciana tree. We created another six feet of lawn space for our tents and fellowship. Thanks Ku for using your lawn tools.
