COACH’S COMMENTS > for Saturday, May 3rd
Aloha Everyone,
“God sets himself against the proud, but he shows FAVOR to the humble. So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and in his good time he will HONOR you. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he CARES about what happens to you.”
I Peter 5:5-7
Hope all of you are well and secure in the power of God’s might. What this verse means to me is that God’s recognition counts more than human praise. God is able and willing to bless us according to His timing. Humbly obey God regardless of present circumstances, and in his good time – either in this life or in the next – He will honor you.
Also, carrying your worries, stresses, and daily struggles by yourself show that you have not trusted God fully with your life. It takes humility, however, to recognize that God cares, to admit your need, and to let others in God’s family help you. Sometimes we think that struggles caused by our own sin and foolishness are not God’s concern. But when we turn to God in repentance, he will bear the weight even of those struggles. Letting God have your anxieties calls for action, not passivity. Don’t submit to circumstances but to the Lord, who controls circumstances.
I apologize for not sending a letter last week. This coach’s newsletter will cover three short subjects today; A. Getting the most out of Rec paddling, B. Steering Committee proposals, C. Acknowledgements and announcements.
A. Getting the most out of Rec paddling:
This was Coach’s agenda from Saturday, May 3rd. Rec Paddlers are now “raising the bar” in training, exercise and canoe racing. This past Saturday, everyone suddenly found themselves in the midst of an intense paddling practice and several canoe races.
Coach comments; “First of all, when I realized most of our competitive teams were participating in canoe races at Magic Island, I decided to take advantage of having so many canoes available that we needed to do some advance paddling training.”
“There’s a lot to learn in our club’s paddling stroke and trying to put it together in a team effort format, especially while you’re racing, is even harder.”
“We, as Rec paddlers, only have once a week to fully engage in the form, techniques and skill sets that the regular competitive paddlers experience 4-days a week.”
“I’m not trying to make competitive paddlers out of Rec paddlers, even though that will sometimes happen, my goal is one of appreciation and education. I believe if we provide the platform for people who come to our beach to expect and receive enjoyment from various water activities that keeps them engaged, they will always want to return each Saturday.”
B. Steering Committee proposals:
Two Saturday’s ago, Coach created a new committee of volunteers called, the “Steering Committee Ohana.” This is an effort to provide entry level training and information to people who want to participate in our club/ministry Rec Paddling Program.
Coach’s comments: “The idea was birthed out of Coach Aka’s steering clinic program. When Rec “steering graduates” came back from Aka’s class, I decided a mentorship program in Rec policies and procedures was needed.”
“Steering is a skill-set not only requiring physical powers, but leadership powers as well. It’s the kind of power that can “go-to-your-head”, if you know what I mean.”
“The committee was also designed to mentor volunteers who are not necessarily “steerers” but who need to possess the same mind-set of a steerer. Coaching from the back of the canoe, being willing and able to possess a servant's heart, while maintaining order and discipline towards others.”
“Here’s my proposal; have a weekly committee conference call (over the phone) at a pre-designated time (preferably late evening, after family is settled-in) for about 30 to 45 minutes. And if you could be sitting by your computer at the same time – that would be even better.”
“Call it teleconferencing discipleship mentoring, on-line, at a distance. I use this same training technique for my business. I already have access to a free on-line telephone conference service, so there would be no costs upfront. Anyway, let me know what you think.”
C. Acknowledgements and announcements:
Coach’s comments: “It’s always important for me to recognize others who willingly give of their time and effort for the service of others. People like Maria, Lita, Ulu, Jo Ann, Keala, Michael-Ann, Coach Ken, Jimmy, Travis, Cheryl and especially our new and great canoe-steersmen and women (Rhonda Stewart, Jenn, Alan, Lynn Bailey, Sandi I., Janell, Keawe, and even Elii (Jimmy’s daughter). God Bless You All!
